Raised in Nenana, Julia is the daughter of a tugboat captain and an educator, grounding her in a deep, lived understanding of the challenges and opportunities facing Alaskans. She brings extensive experience in high-paced, complex outreach and advocacy work spanning federal agencies, Tribal partnerships, and statewide coalitions. Most recently, Julia served as a presidential appointee in the Biden Administration, where she worked as the Alaska State Director for USDA Rural Development. Today, she continues her commitment to advancing equity and accountability as the Executive Director of the Alaska Public Interest Research Group (AKPIRG).
5:45 PM - 6:00 PM | Anchorage Mayor Suzanne LaFrance
Mayor LaFrance grew up in Palmer, Alaska, and has called Anchorage home for more than 25 years. She served two terms on the Anchorage Assembly, including two years as Chair, and brings more than 25 years of private sector experience managing budgets, projects, and teams. She holds degrees from the University of Portland and Purdue University, and has also volunteered with Great Alaska Schools and local scout troops. In 2024, she was elected Mayor of Anchorage and is now proudly serving her first term.
6:00 PM - 6:15 PM | Alaska’s first Alaska Native and first female Representative in Congress Mary Peltola
Mary Peltola previously served as Alaska's At-Large Representative in Congress, where she successfully delivered for Alaskans during her two years in office. She brought home more than $7.8 billion for state infrastructure and rural broadband and hundreds of millions of dollars to renovate the Railbelt Energy Grid and lower energy prices. She served in the Alaska State House for ten years, championing education, public safety, and affordable energy. Later on, she worked to restore Alaska fisheries as the Executive Director of the Kuskokwim River Inter-Tribal Fish Commission. She is a lifelong Alaskan, a mother of seven, a grandmother of two, and a fishing boat captain at the age of fourteen. She recently joined Holland & Hart as Senior Director of Alaska Affairs to work on projects that will improve economic conditions for all Alaskans.

Rocky Plotnick was working for the Alaska Legislature in 1977 when she noticed there were no women at a gathering of school district superintendents. Since that day, she has worked to support women in leadership roles throughout Alaska. Now a grandmother of three Alaskan girls, Rocky continues to advocate for women and women’s issues at the local level.
6:20 PM - 6:25 PM | 2025 Cohort Member BJ Redd Mendez
A dedicated caregiver and proud member of the SEIU 775 bargaining team, BJ Redd Mendez has been a tireless advocate for Medicaid and for Alaska’s caregiving workforce. She has traveled to Washington, D.C. to meet with Alaska’s Congressional Delegation, joined dozens of national virtual press panels to highlight what Medicaid cuts would mean for Alaskans, and stood alongside fellow caregivers in Juneau to secure the first pay increase caregivers have received in more than a decade. Her voice has helped shape the conversation on health care and caregiving in Alaska, and her leadership continues to make a difference. Now, she joins the 2025 Alaska Women Ascend Cohort, stepping into a powerful network of women leaders committed to building Alaska’s future.

As the Executive Director of Stand up Alaska, Erin is a passionate advocate for social justice with a wide-ranging career in nonprofit management, civic engagement, and event production. She played a key role in founding the Alaska Civics Academy, has served as statewide coordinator for the Recall Dunleavy campaign, and is a driving force in the Alaska Coalition for Justice, working to advance fairness, police reform, and solutions to the school-to-prison pipeline
9:05 AM – 9:15 AM | AWA Organizational Values - Jane Angvik
Jane came to Alaska in 1973 as a city planner and soon became a leader in public service. She was elected to the Anchorage Charter Commission and later served six years on the Anchorage Assembly, including as Chair. She also ran for Lieutenant Governor in 1986 and for the State House in 2002. Over her career, Jane has worked with the Alaska Native community and state government, leading the Department of Commerce under Governor Steve Cowper, directing the Division of Land under Governor Tony Knowles, and managing the Alaska Native Foundation. She helped plan the Alaska Native Heritage Center and directed the successful campaign to retain Alaska’s subsistence law. Jane earned degrees from Harvard in Urban Studies and Public Administration and has served on the boards of AWAIC, STAR, Planned Parenthood, Girl Scouts of Alaska, Alaska Women Ascend, and the Alaska Women’s Hall of Fame. She was joyfully married to Vic Fischer for 42 years, and together they raised a daughter and now delight in their grandchildren.

Suzanne Little oversees land conservation in Alaska in partnership with Alaska Natives living in remote areas and communities across the state for Pew’s U.S. conservation project. Little represented the Kenai Peninsula in the Alaska state Senate for one term. Little was voted the most effective new legislator and led the effort to rewrite Alaska’s Open Meetings Act, championing public involvement and local control for resource development. She holds a bachelor’s degree in environmental planning and landscape architecture from the University of California, Davis.

Moderator: Kay Brown - Kay Brown is a former state official, political strategist and journalist. She currently works for Pacific Environment as Arctic Policy Director, focusing on climate and ocean pollution issues. She hosts a weekly podcast, Hot Spots with Kay Brown, on the United America Network, which is shining a light on the most urgent challenges facing our democracy and our planet. From the rise of Christian Nationalism to the climate crisis, attacks on social safety nets, and threats to fundamental freedoms, Kay and her guests bring fearless, informed, and inspiring conversations to the forefront. Hot Spots is dedicated to delivering honest and accurate information that empowers listeners, counters misinformation, and encourages collective action. It’s hosted on Spotify, Apple, Amazon, Audible, Pocketcasts, and Captivate.fm. Kay has broad experience in political, non-profit and public arenas, including 10 years of service as an Alaska State Representative. After leaving the legislature, she helped assemble and lead a large coalition of Alaska environmental groups, the Alaska Conservation Alliance and Voters. She also served as Director of Oil and Gas in the Alaska Department of Natural Resources, and as Executive Director of the Alaska Democratic Party. A journalist by training, Kay is the founder of Alaska Women Ascend, a training program for progressive women candidates and campaign staff. Kay was inducted into the Alaska Women’s Hall of Fame in 2017 for achievement in public policy and politics. She has a B.A. in journalism from Baylor University. After living in Alaska for 48 years, she and her husband Mark Foster moved to Palm Springs, CA in the spring of 2025.
Anchorage Schoolboard Member Margo Bellamy: Anchorage School Board President Margo Bellamy has spent her career fighting for equity and opportunity for all students. From her work as a classroom teacher and administrator to her current role leading the Anchorage School Board, she has been a tireless advocate for children, families, and communities. She is deeply committed to ensuring every student has access to a high-quality education, safe schools, and the resources they need to succeed. Her leadership has been grounded in collaboration, cultural understanding, and a belief that strong public education is the foundation of a thriving Alaska
Representative Carolyn Hall: Carolyn represents District 16 (Turnagain, Spenard, and Sand Lake) in the Alaska House. As a longtime community leader, Carolyn brings a collaborative and solutions-driven approach to the legislature. She believes in the power of women’s leadership to create positive change and is dedicated to building a stronger, more equitable Alaska for the next generation.
Senator Elvi Gray-Jackson: Senator Gray-Jackson represents District G (Anchorage) in the Alaska Senate and has been serving since 2019. Previously, she served nearly a decade in the Anchorage Assembly (District 4) from 2008-2017, where she worked closely with residents on education, public safety, involving Citizens, and improving the quality of life for all citizens. She is Chair of the Legislative Budget & Audit Committee, a key post that provides the legislature with fiscal analysis, budget review and audit functions which helps ensure transparency and accountability. She also serves on committees including Community and Regional Affairs; State Affairs; Labor & Commerce, Legislative Council in addition to five finance subcommittees.
Representative Donna Mears: Donna represents District 21 (East Anchorage) in the Alaska House of Representatives. An environmental engineer by training, she has brought her expertise in sustainability, energy efficiency, and responsible resource management into her legislative work.
Senator Löki Tobin: Senator Tobin represents District I (Anchorage) and serves as the Senate Education Committee Chair, where she champions policies that strengthen schools, support teachers, and expand opportunities for students across the state. She also serves on key committees shaping health, labor, and social policy, bringing a strong voice for working families and equity. Before her election to the Senate, Tobin worked as a legislative aide and policy advisor, giving her deep experience in how laws are made and how communities can influence change. She has been recognized for her advocacy on education, social justice, and LGBTQ+ rights, and continues to elevate the voices of young leaders and underrepresented Alaskans

Deirdre Goins is a veteran, parent, and longtime public servant dedicated to building a more equitable and inclusive Anchorage. Deirdre is passionate about amplifying everyday voices in the political process and creating lasting change that reflects our shared progressive values.

Representative Robyn Naiyuq Burke Frier is the former president of the North Slope Borough School District Board of Education. She flipped the second largest legislative district in America, Alaska House District 40, representing the North Slope and Northwest Arctic Borough which includes19 rural communities across Alaska's Arctic. Robyn's victory secured bipartisan coalition control of the Alaska House of Representatives. She has spent 15 years working in Human Resources and she currently serves as the Assistant Director of HR for the Arctic Slope Native Association (ASNA). She values education, her strong Inupiat heritage and the continued success and wellness of her constituency.

Princess Daazhraii Johnson (Neet’saii Gwich’in) lives on the traditional territory of lower Tanana Dene lands in Alaska. She is a writer/director/producer/actor and is committed to building more narrative sovereignty for other Alaska Native filmmakers and seeing a just transition off of fossil fuels. She serves on the board of Native Movement, NDN Collective, and the Institute of American Indian Arts. Princess received a B.A. in International Relations from The George Washington University and a M.Ed. at the University of Alaska Anchorage with a focus on Environmental and Science Education. She has served on the SAG-AFTRA Native American Committee since 2007 and was appointed by President Obama in 2015 to serve on the Board of Trustees for the Institute of American Indian Arts. She is a Sundance Film Alum, a Nia Tero Storytelling Fellow, and the Creative Producer and a Screenwriter for the Peabody award-winning PBS Kids series “Molly of Denali.”

Polly Carr has lived in Anchorage for 28 years, and is proud to be raising her 14 year old daughter on Dena’ina lands. She has led training for youth and adults in leadership, community organizing, and civic engagement; worked with Alaskans in advocating on issues ranging from child care to climate change; and helped elect leaders at the local, state, and federal level. Polly volunteers with Great Alaska Schools, organizing with other parents and educators in support of public education. In her day job, she serves as Vice President of Programs at the Alaska Humanities Forum, supporting programs that cultivate community-minded leadership, connect people through stories and dialogues, and support resilient cultures. She loves writing poetry, running and biking uphill, and anything with sriracha.

Katie was raised in Anchorage and is a proud graduate of the University of Alaska Anchorage with a degree in Political Science and minors in Spanish & Legal Studies. Her interest in campaign management came after working on Alyse Galvin’s State House race in 2022. Since working at Ship Creek Group, a one-stop-shop for political campaigns, she has successfully managed the campaigns of Maxine Dibert (State House), Grier Hopkins (FNSB Mayor), and Kameron Perez-Verdia (Anchorage Assembly).
Amber Lee is a seasoned political strategist and consultant with a longstanding commitment to advancing progressive causes in Alaska. With over two decades of experience, she has worked on numerous high-profile campaigns and initiatives, including efforts to protect the Affordable Care Act, support ranked-choice voting, and expand healthcare access across Alaska. Through her company, Amber Lee Strategies, she has provided strategic guidance to candidates, nonprofits, Native Corporations, and businesses since 2016. Amber’s career began as a staffer for former Juneau State Representative Beth Kertulla, and her journey has spanned roles in environmental advocacy, telecommunications, and health care. She also coordinates logistics for the Alaska Women Ascend Trainings.

Kim Hays is the Political Director for the Alaska AFL-CIO, the state's largest labor organization, where she works to get pro-labor candidates elected to office and fights for working families' legislation. Born and raised in Alaska, she is a two time graduate of UAA, earning her Bachelor's in Liberal Studies and her Master's degree in Public Administration. Kim and her husband Adam are raising three kids in Alaska while enjoying cooking, fishing, and volunteering in the community.

Christian Killgore has been working as a Campaign Treasurer since August of 2023. Since then he has filed over 60 APOC reports for various campaigns, including campaigns for AWA Alumni like Robyn Burke of House District 40. He trained under Paula DeLaiarro and is currently working as the Deputy Compliance Director for Ship Creek Group, and he is looking forward to the 2026 cycle.

Sydney Scout (she/her) was born and raised on Dena'ina Lands in Anchorage. She has spent over a decade leading political, labor, and clean energy organizing work with groups including the Working Families Party, Campaign Workers Guild, and Our Climate. She currently manages a national portfolio of work focused on advancing the clean energy transition through Rural Electric Cooperative Elections, coordinates the Alaska Votes (C4/PAC/IE) table, advises rural organizing groups on their Alaska strategy, serves as AKPIRG's Board Chair, and is running for the Anchorage Assembly to represent District 1, where she is a member-owner of the SafeHaven Housing Cooperative.

Anna Brawley represents West Anchorage (District 3) on the Anchorage Assembly, and also serves as Vice Chair. She is a professional city planner and project manager, as well as being deeply involved in community and local government prior to being elected. On the Assembly she focuses on housing policy, budget and fiscal policy, and achieving two key objectives: solve problems and settle disputes.

Jenny-Marie Stryker (she/her) is the incoming Executive Director for the Alaska Democratic Party after having worked in Alaska politics since 2018. She comes to the party after spending more than five years as the Political Director for The Alaska Center, where she led The Alaska Center’s work to elect leaders that will champion a thriving, just, and sustainable future. This work included running The Alaska Center’s endorsement process, Independent Expenditure, legislative advocacy, and many political partnerships. Jenny-Marie also has experience working as a campaign consultant in Alaska in 2018 and 2019, where she worked on over a dozen Alaska campaigns up and down the ballot, and briefly as a journalist.

Before joining The Alaska Center, Chantal led political fundraising for Alyse Galvin’s campaign for US House in 2018. She began her nonprofit career serving families experiencing homelessness on the south side of Chicago.

Judy Jessen - Judy Jessen is the Senior Political and Advocacy Organizer in the Growth Department at SEIU 775, where she works to strengthen the voices of workers and advance policies that improve lives across Alaska and beyond. A graduate of the University of Alaska Anchorage with a degree in Human Services, Judy was also a proud member of the Seawolf Speech and Debate team. She brings more than a decade of political and advocacy experience to her role. She served as a Legislative Aide in Juneau for over seven years, helping to shape policy and support Alaskans in the legislative process. Earlier in her career, Judy worked as a Field Organizer for the Alaska Democratic Party, where she built grassroots power and engaged communities across the state. With deep roots in Alaska and a passion for equity and justice, Judy continues to dedicate her career to empowering people and making government more responsive to the needs of everyday Alaskans.

Alyse is a mom, an Alaskan, a community leader, and a fighter for working families across our state. As co-founder and leader of the nonpartisan group Great Alaska Schools, she helped grow the organization from 40 volunteers into a force of more than 4,000 Alaskans advocating for restored funding and stronger public education. Her leadership has been recognized across party lines—Republican Governor Sean Parnell appointed her to work with rural and urban districts to better connect families and schools, expand student services, and improve literacy from pre-K through 12th grade. Later, she served on Governor Bill Walker’s Education Transition Team, where she focused on strengthening curricula, supporting teachers, and ensuring Alaska’s students are ready for college and careers. Today, as a member of the Alaska State Legislature, Alyse continues to bring that same passion and commitment to the Capitol, fighting every day for our kids, our schools, and Alaska’s future.

Ivy Spohnholz is a third-generation Alaskan, born in Nebesna and raised in Anchorage and Talkeetna. After a 20-year career in nonprofit management, she served in the Alaska State House from 2016 to 2023, where her proudest accomplishment was expanding access to telehealth care for all Alaskans. She is the CEO of Spohnholz and Company, LLC, and serves on the boards of the Alaska Children's Trust, Common Sense Alaska, and the executive committee for the Alaska Democratic Party.

Nora Morse has been involved in Alaska politics for over 10 years. She has run statewide and local campaigns and has worked in the Anchorage Mayor's office, for the Anchorage Police Department, and was the Political Director for Planned Parenthood Alliance Advocates. Nora is currently the Communications Director at NEA-Alaska.
Julie Hasquet is the Sr. Manager, Corporate Communications for Chugach Electric. A strategic communicator with an extensive background in internal and external communications. Julie’s experience spans nearly four decades of working in media, politics, oil and gas, and the electric utility industry. She is considered one of the top communicators in Alaska.

Partner, Head of Finance and Data Teams. Kim Jones is a partner at Ship Creek Group, where she leads a fundraising team supporting campaigns at every level. She previously served as Finance Director for Alyse Galvin for Congress in 2020, setting records for individual Alaskan donors to a congressional campaign. Before entering politics, Kim spent eight years as a Wildlife Biologist studying caribou and moose in Alaska.

Representative Carrick is a fourth-generation Alaskan with deep family roots in the Interior. She moved from Anchorage to attend the University of Alaska Fairbanks, where she earned a degree in Psychology and later a Master’s in Public Health from UAA. Before running for office, Ashley worked as a substitute teacher, program coordinator, nonprofit director, and legislative aide — including five years as Chief of Staff to Representative Adam Wool. In 2022, she was elected to represent House District 35, where she focuses on education, health, workforce development, and fiscal sustainability. Ashley lives in Fairbanks with her two beagles, Beelz and Zephyr. She loves climbing, camping, and being part of the vibrant local arts community. She often says she’d rather be in Alaska on its worst day than anywhere else on its best day.
Representative Rebecca Himschoot is an Alaska State Representative and a retired elementary teacher who has lived in Sitka for 26 years. She has served on several boards as well as the Sitka Assembly. Over her 30-year career in education, Rep. Himschoot was recognized as an Albert Einstein Distinguished Educator with a fellowship at the National Science Foundation and received the Presidential Award for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching. She currently serves on the House Fisheries, Community & Regional Affairs, and Education Committees as well as the House Corrections, Fish & Game, Public Safety, and Education & Early Development Finance Subcommittees. Depending on the weather, she can be found on a mountain, in a kayak, bicycling, or hunkered down with a good book. Rep. Himschoot refers to her “North Star” as the Alaskan values of hard work, freedom, compassion, and integrity, and she is committed to improving the quality of life in her region and throughout Alaska.

Michelle (Macuar) Sparck is the director of Get Out the Native Vote (GOTNV), a statewide non-profit voter education organization based out of Anchorage under the Alaska Federation of Natives.
